River Landing Conversion Proposal

What a glorious, triumphal entrance to River Landing could be made if Victoria Bridge were transformed into a pedestrian, wheel-chair and bike friendly hanging garden! A dramatic pathway punctuated with flower beds and prairie plants. This significant heritage structure from Saskatoon’s past could become a grand and expressive entrance to our River Landing project; it then would symbolically and literally represent the passage from our founding years to the modern present.

A glimpse of what Victoria Bridge might look like may be gleaned by looking at High Line Park in New York City:

Thank-you so much for blogging about our idea. Both my father and I surely appreciate the support. Any attention we can generate is good.

A friend of mine, who’s a runner (and former cyclist), says Victoria Bridge is “the center of the fitness community in Saskatoon” – just one more reason, why it ought to be converted, as such.

Saskatoon is such a pretty city and it really deserves to keep its Victoria Bridge and use it as a bike and foot path. This could also be a place for artists to display their work and for bikers and pedestrians to enjoy it. Let’s not waste such an opportunity.

I’d only just begun writing about the pleasures of bike riding around that neighbourhood, including a route across Victoria Bridge, as part of my recovery from starvation when they closed the bridge. Now there’s no real bike friendly way to cross there, save for Broadway which isn’t nearly as level, nor is it as close to the trail level as Victoria is.

saskatoon has a chance to show how much it looks after pedestrians and cyclists, specially those on low incomes and cannot afford the luxury of a vehicle. As well, it would keep an important piece o our history in use. If they can afford to string lights on it, they can afford to keep it functional. Why not liase with the local artists and botanists, to keep it beautiful and let people showcase their work? Mr. Mayor, this is a wake-up call…
